Species Mind Lecture Song Recommendation

Odetta is one of my favourite artists of all time. She is a black woman and often overlooked founder of the 50’s - 60’s folk music revival. I want to share this song of hers, because she is singing about exactly what Ariel spoke about in this lecture, and because I believe it is important to amplify black voices at this time. Hi this black woman is wondering why race and gender is necessary in your share? Do you do that when you share music from white Male artists? Just curious (&furious)

Hi Millie, I shared this post on Tuesday, June 2nd, a day where in many of my social networks, it was encouraged to share and amplify black voices as a way encourage people to centre to their perspectives and experiences and to act in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Posts like these have been very common in my networks. This post is meant to do that, as I felt this magical community might enjoy it and benefit from it. My intention in specifying race and gender here was both to make this connection clear and in this case, since many white musicians (like Bob Dylan) became very rich and famous by studying and imitating artists like Odetta while they, though they were successful in their own rights, never reached the same level of fame and esteem. So I feel it’s important to recognize gender and race in this context because often contributions are undervalued and overlooked based on those factors. I don’t do this when I share music from white male artists (in fact, I don’t share them very often). The reason why is because I feel that they get enough publicity and recognition as it is. As I said in my post, she is one of my favourite artists of all time, and so I hope to spread her music far and wide so everyone can enjoy it. Also, since you’ve had me reflect on it, I suppose those things are obvious and might not have needed to be named. My intention was to recognize her contribution to music in context with those factors and I understand that might not have been the impact it had. I hope that was a good explanation! Also, I’m curious as to why my doing this made you angry. I’ll be really clear because text communication can be unclear sometimes: I genuinely want to hear and know, and I don’t want to make any assumptions about why you feel the way you do. There’s also no obligation or pressure to respond, though I do appreciate a dialogue. Sorry for such a long post...I just wanted to be crystal clear about where I was coming from and answer all your questions the best I could.
