I'd like to recommend the Herbal tarot and accompanying guide The Spirit of Herbs by Michael Tierra and Candis Cantin. Not an herbal reference book per se, but a good way to begin to look at associations between tarot and plant spirits, and discover the spiritual properties of certain herbs with emphasis on the four elements. I've used this deck for 25 years.
To add to the other suggestions..Culpepers Complete Herbal is an interesting olde school book; also researching material related to 'The Doctrine of Signatures' might be of interest to you.
I just started reading Culpeper's Complete Herbal and while some of the language is a bit hard to understand it's incredibly interesting and I can't get enough of it. I absolutely love this guy's attitude. I finally have an answer to that question "If you could have dinner with anyone from history, who would it be?" 😄
I like Cunningham's very first book a lot. It's called Magical Herbalism. The encyclopedia has more herbs in it, but his way of writing and presenting the subject in Magical Herbalism is excellent.I also highly recommend Mastering Herbalism by Paul Huson
I was just looking through the preview for the encyclopedia and I noticed that it referenced Magical Herbalism several times, so I was thinking that might be a better place to start.
I am a trained herbalist and am open to answering any questions about medicinal uses at any time! Magical uses of herbs are a little different than medicinal uses... I am not adept with the magical associations yet but I have heard the book Antoinette listed above is a great place to start!
Thank you so much Rae! I enjoy learning about the medicinal uses too. I really like the book The Gift of Healing Herbs by Robin Rose Bennett. It will be very interesting to compare the magical vs medicinal uses for different herbs.
Hi Bella, I LOVE Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. It's one of the more comprehensive books on magical use of herbs that I own. I reach for it first when I want to reference an herb. I have several of Scott Cunningham's books and I've found them useful and really fun! He was a wonderful author!
Thanks so much Cathy! This one looks very focused on oils and scent but I've got so many herbs here growing in my garden and wild, I'd like to get to know them better as whole plants. But thank you for the suggestion!
My medicine woman was activated with the covid. Using herbs to boost the immune system and essential oils to purify the air. I’m really interested in herbalism.
