Claiming Your Power: Build a Magical Practice That’s Truly Your Own

Moonlit forest with tall trees, glowing blue and green hues, a misty path, and a serene atmosphere. No text present.

I often say there are no witch police, and it’s a vital reminder because the core principle of the Craft is simple: do what you will. Nobody has the authority to dictate your magic, your magical practice, or your journey. You have the freedom to explore and shape your path as you see fit.

That said, just because you can do something doesn’t mean it’s the most effective option. Freedom is empowering, but it also comes with responsibility. While no one can tell you "no" (as the old Book of Shadows says, "no one may say you nay"), some methods naturally yield better results than others.

Think of magical practice as similar to fitness. With Pilates, for example, consistent effort builds strength, improves posture, and boosts overall health over time. While learning from an experienced instructor can enhance your results, following a book or video can still yield benefits—just not as effectively. The same applies to weightlifting: working with a trainer ensures optimal progress, but creating your own routine can also be effective. There’s no such thing as “fitness police,” just as there’s no “witch police.” However, informed choices and proven techniques often lead to better outcomes.

Your magical practice is uniquely yours—free from rigid rules or external authorities dictating your approach. While social media, forums, books, or videos may claim there’s a “right” way, the truth is this: your relationship to the Craft is for you to define. What matters most is finding methods that align with your intentions and create meaningful results.

Cultivating an Effective Magical Practice

I’m often asked questions like, “Can I do this?” or “Is that allowed?” My answer is always the same: you can choose to do whatever you want to do. Magic is a profoundly personal journey, and experimentation is at its core. However, if you’re asking, “Will this work?” that’s a different question entirely. There’s a distinction between understanding magical theory and putting it into practice. By grasping the principles behind magic, you can determine which methods will be most effective for you. Magical practice thrives on thoughtful exploration, testing, and learning. It’s about discovering what truly makes an impact on your deep mind, which will ultimately be unique to you.

Recently, someone asked if they could substitute metals for the planetary Kameas by writing the metal's periodic table symbol on the back. My response? That’s a wonderfully creative idea—give it a try. Experimentation is a powerful way to discover what aligns with your magical practice and what doesn’t. The results will speak for themselves: you’ll either achieve results from your magic that you’re happy with, or you won’t.

How we frame questions about magic often reflects where we are in our practice. For example, if you’re working on foundational techniques like grounding and centering, you might ask, “Do I have to do this before performing magic?” The answer is no—you don’t have to do anything. But it’s worth trying both ways to observe the difference. Grounding connects your energy to the earth, balances your internal forces, and helps you work from a clear, focused state. Skipping it isn’t “wrong,” but comparing results with and without grounding will show you its value.

The same goes for spirit guide meditations. In my practice, connecting with a deeper, wiser part of myself brings clarity and insights that surface-level thinking can’t provide. Sometimes this connection appears as a spirit guide, but it can take any form that feels meaningful to you. These moments of connection often provide guidance that elevates your magical practice to new levels.

Ultimately, your magical practice is about what works for you. Experiment, observe, and refine. Trust your instincts, and let your results guide the way. While teachers and resources offer valuable techniques, true mastery comes from within. The wisdom of your magical practice doesn’t originate from a coven or a book—it comes from your own superconscious mind. This inner wellspring holds infinite knowledge, accessible whenever you need it.

You don’t need anyone’s validation or permission to walk your own path. Recently, I spoke with someone who felt they had fallen short in their practice because life’s demands had limited their ability to meditate or focus on their magical practice. I reminded them that their spiritual foundation had been their anchor, sustaining them through those challenging times, even when they couldn’t actively engage in their practice.

The Craft is Constantly Evolving

Another person hesitated to continue a practice because it included elements they didn’t enjoy. I told them, “You don’t have to do it all. Focus on what resonates with you and set aside the rest. You might revisit those parts later—or not at all. There’s no need to force practices that don’t align with you.” Notice your results. If you are getting what you want, then it’s working.

There’s always an alternative approach to your craft. As you strengthen your connection with your inner guidance, you may discover methods far more effective than anything a teacher or resource could show you. Your magical practice is as flexible and personal as you make it—so embrace the freedom to shape it your way.

When we stop idolizing teachers, celebrities, and authors—appreciating their expertise without allowing it to overshadow our own inner wisdom—our craft flourishes, we free ourselves from the need to conform to predefined expectations, rejecting arbitrary labels and limitations. The internet often lays bare the workings of the ego, showing how trends emerge, dominate, and fade. Stepping away from the endless chase of these trends liberates us from the belief that we’ll never truly master our magical practice. That persistent feeling of inadequacy—the constant “I should be doing this, I should be doing that”—is nothing more than the voice of the so-called “witch police,” aimed at undermining your confidence to elevate their own authority. Instead, trust your own path.

Focus on the foundational principles of magic, understanding that techniques and aesthetics will naturally evolve—sometimes daily, weekly, or even yearly. My practice today is vastly different from what it was 20 years ago, and it will continue to grow and transform. While methods may shift, the core principles remain constant. If you listen to my old lectures from the 1980s, you’ll find my tone, examples, and even delivery may have changed, but the fundamental truths at the heart of my work have stayed the same.

When you're exploring the world of witchcraft, don't let anyone intimidate you or make you feel unworthy. You don't need to know everything—nobody can. The vast information in the Craft is often contradictory, and it's impossible to master it all. Instead, listen to your inner guide. Ask yourself: What is my path right now? What practice serves my best self? How can I make a meaningful impact on the world? These questions are valuable, and the answers will come from within—your superconscious mind, spirit guide, or however you interpret that connection.

Growing and Trusting Your Magical Practice

In my early twenties, I was deeply engaged in building communities. I had a teacher who once told me, “If you want to be the big witch queen, go for it. And if you want to leave that behind later, that’s okay too.” That advice was freeing—it reminded me that I wasn’t tied to any one role or approach.

Your magical practice will evolve, shaped by where you are in your journey. Teachers, books, and resources can provide valuable tools and insights, but ultimately, your true guide is within you. Over time, you’ll rely less on external mentors and more on your inner wisdom, which is always present and knows the way forward.

Your connection to magic is as unique as you are. While you can learn from others, your authentic expression of the Craft is yours alone to define. Own your power, use the resources available, and trust your inner guide. Authors and lecturers offer tools and inspiration, not dogma. You shape your path. No one can force you to practice in a certain way or to share what you don't want to. Your will is paramount; you have ultimate freedom.

The saying, "And it harm none, do what you will," doesn't fully resonate with me. Not because I desire to harm, but because it begins with a restriction. If you truly follow your Will—what your soul and superconscious mind guide you to be, do, and have—harming others isn't even a consideration. You seek your own power, wisdom, truth, and reconnection.

When everyone follows their Will, there's no harm; everyone finds their rightful place in the Divine Design. It's when we stray from our divine path that we cause harm. So, don't feel obligated to add that qualifier. The sole law of the Craft is: "Do what you will." Discover your Will and act upon it.

Continually remind yourself: your magical practice and your ultimate guidance come from within. You will always grow in power, always succeed in your magic. You'll achieve better results as you learn to apply principles in a way that truly makes sense for you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog post! Blessed be.
