Today, we’re exploring the Hermetic principle of gender, which is one of the seven Hermetic principles outlined in The Kybalion. While this book has become a key reference for understanding the Hermetic teachings, it’s essential to recognize that the Hermetic tradition is far broader, encompassing a wealth of ancient writings. The Kybalion is a great introduction, but it shouldn’t replace the deeper study of Hermetic texts, which, while more complex, offer immense rewards.

Using the Hermetic Principle of Gender to Find Balance

The Hermetic principle of gender teaches that everything contains both masculine and feminine energies, present on all levels of existence. This concept is often misunderstood, especially when confused with physical sex or societal definitions of male and female. The Hermetic idea of gender isn’t about physical bodies, nor does it negate non-binary identities. Instead, it acknowledges that all beings and things embody both masculine and feminine energies. These dual forces are fundamental to the universe, and regardless of a person’s physical makeup or gender, these powers are part of their makeup.

The word "gender" shares its roots with "generate," pointing to its connection with creation. All acts of creation depend on the interaction between masculine and feminine energies. This dynamic is evident in the formation of atoms, the interplay of positive and negative charges, and the vibrations that produce light, heat, electricity, and magnetism. Even chemical reactions rely on this balance. In Hermetic philosophy, every individual, regardless of their body, carries both masculine and feminine qualities.

Understanding this principle helps illustrate how creation works on every level, from the cosmos to our personal lives. Masculine and feminine energies work together to shape existence, underpinning natural processes and magical practices alike. By recognizing this balance, we gain clearer insights into how the universe functions and how to apply this knowledge in meaningful ways.

By extension, this principle applies to us as individuals. Masculine and feminine energies are not separate; they are intertwined, forming the creative force behind everything in existence.

This duality becomes especially significant when we consider the mind. The mind is inherently creative, and its creativity arises from the interaction of these two complementary energies. The conscious, or objective, part of the mind represents the masculine energy—decisive and action-oriented. Meanwhile, the subconscious, or subjective, part embodies the feminine energy—receptive and nurturing. Together, these energies enable us to think, create, and influence the world around us. The key is to channel this creative power intentionally, rather than letting it operate unconsciously. This is the foundation of magical practice—harnessing these energies with purpose and clarity.

The Interplay of Masculine and Feminine Energies in the Hermetic Principle of Gender

On a universal level, there is only one mind. Within this universal intelligence, countless unique identities emerge—what we recognize as our souls. Alongside our souls, we also develop personalities and egos. Both soul and ego carry masculine and feminine aspects, reflecting the Hermetic principle of gender. By understanding the dynamic between these energies within ourselves—our conscious and subconscious, our masculine and feminine—we gain a deeper understanding of how we shape our reality and align with the creative forces of existence.

Creativity and manifestation are born from the collaboration between these two aspects of the mind. When a thought or intention is introduced to the subconscious, it is like planting a seed in fertile ground. The conscious, masculine side of the mind determines and plants the seed, while the subconscious, feminine side nurtures it, allowing it to grow into reality.

The feminine side of the mind does not question what is planted. Similar to how the earth accepts any seed under the right conditions—good, bad, or neutral—the subconscious mind nurtures whatever is introduced to it. This highlights the importance of controlling the conscious mind, which is constantly planting seeds through thoughts, desires, fears, and memories. Without awareness or direction, the conscious mind can scatter seeds randomly, leading to unintended outcomes.

This process emphasizes the importance of consciously choosing thoughts and intentions. Whether through deliberate rituals or symbolic gestures, the goal is to focus the subconscious mind with clarity and purpose. When thoughts are directed and paired with meaningful symbols, the subconscious mind responds with greater alignment and impact.

The interplay between the masculine and feminine aspects of the mind lies at the heart of magic and manifestation. By understanding how these energies work together, we can take greater responsibility for the outcomes we create in our lives. Whether through intentional action or natural processes, creation begins with a clear intention and the careful nurturing of ideas within the fertile ground of the subconscious.

The feminine aspect of the mind embodies receptivity, nurturing, and the process of gestation and bringing ideas into reality. Many traditions symbolize this energy as the goddess or the womb. In Christianity, the concept of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit achieves balance when the Holy Spirit is recognized as a feminine principle, representing harmony within the universal order. Gender, in this context, is not a limitation but a dynamic force that illustrates how creation and transformation occur at every level of existence.

The Inner Dynamics of the Hermetic Principle of Gender

What’s most significant—particularly in creative or transformative pursuits—is how these principles operate within the mind. Each of us carries both masculine and feminine energies, which work together to bring about change, growth, and fulfillment. By consciously understanding and engaging with these internal dynamics, we gain the ability to shape our reality. This process allows us to step into the essence of creation, becoming active participants in the universe’s continuous evolution.

At all times, an inner source of guidance is available to help us navigate and harness these forces effectively. The masculine principle, which rules conscious thought and action, is where we exercise control. This energy guides what seeds we plant—the words we speak, the thoughts we focus on, and the emotions we nurture. These are the components of the mind we can intentionally shape to influence our experiences.

Regardless of physical gender—male, female, or non-binary—the masculine energy within each of us serves as a powerful tool for creating our experiences. By working with this inner dynamic, we align ourselves with the universe’s creative forces, transforming desires into reality through clarity, focus, and deliberate effort.

The masculine aspect is the part of us that exerts influence and direction, while the feminine remains a profound, untamed force. The feminine energy of creation requires trust and patience, unfolding naturally without interference. Just as seeds cannot be dug up to force their growth, or a developing fetus cannot be rushed to maturity, the feminine must be honored with care and surrender.

Using the Hermetic Principle of Gender to Overcome Inner Conflict

Conflicting thoughts or actions can block progress, much like weeds choking a garden. For instance, you might aim for financial prosperity and take steps to attract abundance. However, if contradictory habits or negative thinking take over, they can undermine your efforts. To help your goals grow and succeed, it’s essential to consciously manage your thoughts and carefully choose the actions that support your objectives.

Strengthening this conscious, decision-making part of yourself is key. Practices that build mental discipline can help you develop this control. These tools enhance your ability to make deliberate choices, sustain focus, and guide your energy effectively. Ultimately, this responsibility lies with you—no one else can manage this part of your mind. It is a personal practice that shapes your reality.

In contrast, feminine energy reveals itself in dreams, moments of deep creativity, or profound intuition. It’s not something to control, but something to honor and respect, allowing its creative force to flow naturally. Balancing these two energies within ourselves creates harmony and fosters growth and creativity.

To grow, it’s essential to cultivate a more balanced approach by nurturing a receptive, feminine attitude. This means stepping back from always leading or directing and focusing on truly listening. Many of us spend so much time giving instructions or taking action that we forget to pause and hear what’s being offered to us. Fundamental transformation happens when we balance leading with openness to guidance.

Embracing the Hermetic Principle of Gender for Manifestation, Balance, and Growth

When we take time to listen—whether in meditation or during daily life—we deepen our connection to higher wisdom. Think of it this way: when two forces of the exact nature collide, they push against each other. If we constantly demand answers from God, the universe, or even ourselves, we create unnecessary resistance. But by pausing and asking, “What would you have me do? Be? Where would you have me go?” we enter a state of openness that allows divine inspiration to flow in and guide us.

Approaching life from a place of control can only take us so far. True growth—discovering who we are, experiencing joy, and creating meaningful change—requires the willingness to release control. By stepping away from constant action, even for a few moments each day, we create space for something greater to emerge. This process is about allowing ourselves to slow down, receive, and simply be.

When we’re caught in overthinking—whether it’s regrets from the past, worries about the future, or endless striving—we let masculine energy dominate, and chaos often follows. To evolve, we need to practice quieting the mind and opening ourselves to receive. In those quiet moments, we create room for divine insight and transformation.

Balancing action with openness leads to genuine growth. When these complementary energies work together, they nurture progress, presence, and alignment with a higher purpose. Through this balance, we create lives filled with harmony, joy, and meaningful change.

The Hermetic principle of gender teaches us that both masculine and feminine energies exist within all of us, working together as essential forces of creation and transformation. By embracing this balance, we align with universal laws that guide growth and harmony. Masculine energy gives us the power to decide, take action, and direct our focus, while feminine energy teaches us to nurture, trust, receive, and flow with life’s natural rhythms. When we honor and integrate these dual forces, we unlock our full potential, creating a life that reflects both purpose and peace.
