Ripples in water with vibrant orange and blue reflections, centered on a droplet causing circular waves, evoking a calm, reflective mood. Represents the law of cause and effect.

Life sometimes feels like a series of unrelated events. Random occurrences that can either have positive or negative consequences. Happy accidents. Unexpected tragedy. We chalk it up to being lucky. Unlucky. Destiny. None of those things feels tangible. But what if there was something much bigger than luck or tragedy consistently at work in our lives? What if there was an unbreakable force directing the flow of universal energy that is responsible for everything from galaxies forming to the tiniest thoughts in your mind? Enter The Law of Cause and Effect.

The Law of Cause and Effect is a Hermetic Law that states that nothing happens by chance. Every event, situation, and condition we experience is the effect of a cause. There is a payoff for every action taken. If we can understand this, we can move from experiencing life to consciously creating our lives.

We will cover how this law works. We will discuss how every legitimate cause-and-effect relationship starts with thought, how the physical world (effects) and the non-physical world (causes) interact, and how your reaction can create your future. By the end of this, you’ll learn how to stop floating through life and actually steer your ship using laws that were discovered thousands of years ago.

The Illusion of Chance

We live in a world full of games of chance. One where everything seems to happen by random encounters. The very notion that everything has a cause sounds absurd. Yet, when a plane goes down we look for the black box. Why? Because we know there was a cause. We know it didn’t crash because of “chance”. When we look at problems through science we easily accept there is a cause to everything in the physical world. But when it comes to our personal life we tend to brush events off as coincidence.

Consider your life. You exist because your great-great-grandparents decided to have children with each other. This happened because their parents met and had children together. Your birth was the end product of a continuous chain of cause and effect. Look at the world around you. It seems as though physical things cause other physical things to occur.

Yet the real power of causation doesn’t happen outside of you. It originates from the invisible world in your deep mind. Everything you see unfold in front of you is simply an out-picturing of thought and consciousness. The events themselves are not causes; the ideas behind the events are the causes. Causation doesn’t flow from the outward to the inward. Power flows from the inward planes to the outward planes.

The Battleground of the Mind

Most humans go through life as victims of cause and effect. We get pushed around by life and feel we have no control. It can seem like we have no free will. We’re prisoners of fate, cosmic influences, or other people’s actions. But remember that although we can’t always control what happens to us, we can control one amazing thing. Our response.

That is where our power lies. Our response to anything is the next cause we create. Our reaction is the one thing we get to create. It’s our opportunity to break a negative cycle of cause and effect. It’s where the magic starts.

The ego-response is automatic. The ego-mind always responds first with its own perceived agenda. It immediately tries to react to what happened with one of its stocked-up reactions (based on fears, rewards, habits, etc.). When the ego reacts, we get pushed deeper into life’s problems. Anger, fear, lust, defense are all ego responses based on its erroneous thought system. When we react from the ego, we inevitably create new causes for our own suffering.

Once you realize this, you’ve been set free. If you know your ego will react first, you can wait to respond. Inside that glorious pause is where your power lies. Bypass the ego by refusing to react right away.

Moving from Reaction to Conscious Creation

The secret to applying the Law of Cause and Effect is not to react, and instead become a conscious creator. You do this by learning to pause before your knee-jerk emotional reaction kicks in. Rather than allowing your ego mind to automatically react, you learn to pause and turn within and ask for inspiration and guidance from your inner guide.

Your higher self, your Divine connection to the Divine is your Inner “Merlin.” It knows for more about cause and effect then your ego mind does. Your higher self responds from a place of Oneness and Wisdom. When you pause and ask, “How would you have me respond?” You are allowing a higher level of causes to become planted in the fertile ground of your mind.

There are a few steps to this process.

Recognize the Reaction: Feel the impulse to automatically react to a person or situation. This could be feeling angry, frustrated, scared, etc. Allow yourself to feel the impulse, but don’t act on it.

Create a Space: This step is choosing to wait. Don’t say anything, don't act on your initial impulse to react. Pause and allow yourself to exercise the ultimate act of self-control. This is where your power lies.

Ask: Turn to the inner guide. Silence your mind and ask your Higher Self to show you the way. You can simply ask, “Show me how to look at this differently” or “What is the way to handle this situation?”

Receive: Allow the answer you seek to come to you. Sometimes it will come when you least expect it. It may come as an idea, a thought, or a feeling sensation. You will know because it won’t feel like your ego talking, it will feel calm. It will feel right. Peaceful. Good.

Respond: Now take the action that you received from your Guide. This action is now part of a different set of causes that you created by rising to a higher level of consciousness before you responded.

That’s it. That is high magic. This is ancient magical wisdom. The entire process is the raising of your vibration so that you operate on higher levels of causation. When you operate from higher causes, you are no longer affected by the small stuff that most people are affected by such as negativity, emotions, people fighting, politics, money problems, bad astrological aspects, etc. You are now above the battle ground.

The Inevitability of the Law of Cause and Effect

The universe does not function in chaos. It may seem chaotic to us because our perception is limited. We do not see the full spectrum of cause and effect. Every action stems from a cause and creates an effect. This Law is 100% accountable for everything. There is no dodging it. It rules over every realm of existence. Nothing escapes this Law of Cause and Effect.

The Law is "no respecter of persons." It’s not here to personally reward you or punish you. It simply exists. If you are seeing an effect manifest in your reality then there is a cause creating that effect. If you want the effect to change, you must change the cause. The ego-mind wants to skip that step. The ego wants to try and control the world of effects. It wants to manipulate circumstances and people, it wants to force outcomes instead of cleaning up the cause (mind). This is what leads to our perpetual struggles. This is the ego's wild goose chase.

You will never find peace or power by believing that you are some little separated speck fighting against a cruel world. You are how God expresses itself as you. You are a ray of light emanating from a central star. Whatever is going on for you at this moment in your perceived reality is nothing more than a dream. A bad dream you think is real. Remember who you are. You are a creator.

Becoming the Student of Your Own Life

How do you move into this realm of causation? You do it by becoming humble. You start saying, “I don’t know.” You begin listening. Think of yourself as the young Arthur who as an apprentice of Merlin. This Merlin, this guide, is within you.

Question everything your ego believes to be true. Question why you want what you want. Why do you believe something is “good” or “bad”? Why do you react to life in the way you do? When you learn to question yourself, you begin undoing the knee-jerk reactions you have towards life. You’ll begin to see that many of the choices you thought you were freely giving yourself were merely reactions to satisfy the ego's dictates based on pain, emotional trauma, socially-induced programming, etc.

True freedom is learning how to say no to your ego's reactions. True freedom is realizing you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. “I don’t have to react to that anger. I don’t have to obey that craving. I can wait till I connect with something truer than that.”

As you learn to pause and ask, you become the student that your teacher needs you to be. The messages your inner teacher has for you become that much more obvious. You will be shown, step-by-step, how to rightfully respond to the world around you with power and intelligence. You will walk among others and they will wonder to themselves how life just seems to go your way. Your strength doesn't come from trying to control what happens outside of you, but rather your strength comes from letting go of your perceived powerlessness by wielding your inner power to create.

This isn’t an overnight process. Remember how addicted we are to our problems, to drama, and to the way the ego perceives the world. Letting go of all that for a power you feel you know nothing about can seem scary. And that’s why you take it one baby step at a time. Learn to not react, and instead ask questions. Be like an empty chalice ready to be filled. The more you practice this, the more your life will fall into perfect alignment. You will no longer be reacting to life. You will be creating your life by working with the law of cause and effect: The Universe’s number one law.
